6 Tiny Decisions That Say More About You Than You Think

You walk into a meeting and pick a chair. You set your CV in some font without thinking about it. You sign your name and the loops come out the size they always come out. You’re sure none of this means anything. The data disagree. Most of the small, automatic choices people make every day have been studied by someone in a basement office at a research university, and the correlations they pulled out are weirder than the cliché versions. Six of them, with the actual studies.

Which seat you pick at a rectangular table changes how everyone in the room rates you — including for things the seat shouldn’t predict

In a study originally published in Psychological Reports, Robert Pellegrini photographed strangers seated at rectangular tables and had observers rate them on traits like talkativeness, persuasiveness, leadership, and intelligence. Whoever happened to be photographed at the head of the table was rated higher on every dimension — and was named “probably contributed most to the group’s task” at well above chance.

The folk version of this is “dominant personalities pick the head seat.” The Pellegrini seating study flips the causality. The seat manufactures the perception. Anyone who sits there gets the halo, regardless of whether they say a single word.

Which means the “alpha takes the head seat” story has it backwards. You don’t get rated as a leader because you picked the chair. You get rated as a leader because you picked the chair.

The font you set a document in changes how true the words inside it feel — and only one specific font does it consistently

In 2012, filmmaker Errol Morris ran a covert experiment with The New York Times. About 45,000 readers were shown the same factual statement set in one of six typefaces — Baskerville, Computer Modern, Georgia, Helvetica, Trebuchet, or Comic Sans — and asked whether they agreed with it. The results were analyzed by psychologist David Dunning.

Baskerville produced a small but statistically significant bump in agreement (p = .0083). The other serifs didn’t. Helvetica didn’t. Comic Sans did the predictable thing. The Baskerville effect isn’t generic serif gravitas — it’s a specific letterform, designed by John Baskerville in 1757, that modern eyes read as authoritative.

The same words become more true-feeling in a 268-year-old typeface. If you’ve ever wondered why legal documents and luxury packaging gravitate toward serifs with sharp terminals and high contrast, the publishers figured this out long before the experiment confirmed it.

Self-identifying as a “dog person” or “cat person” predicts your personality even if you don’t own either

A 2010 University of Texas study by Sam Gosling, Carson Sandy, and Jeff Potter surveyed 4,565 people and asked them to identify as a dog person, cat person, both, or neither. The dog-identifiers scored measurably higher on extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. The cat-identifiers scored higher on openness and neuroticism.

The interesting part isn’t the cliché (“dog people are friendlier”). It’s that openness to experience — the trait most associated with intellectual curiosity, creative work, and unconventional thinking — tilts cat. The stereotype of the eccentric artist with a cat turns out to have real predictive validity. The effect held up when controlled for owning a pet at all. The preference alone leaks the personality.

The physical size of your handwritten signature predicts your narcissism — and at the executive level, predicts whether your company will overinvest in acquisitions

Howard Zweigenhaft linked larger signatures to higher self-esteem back in 1970. The newer version is much weirder. A 2018 paper in Review of Accounting Studies by Ham, Seybert, and Wang measured roughly 600 CEO signatures from S&P 500 SEC filings. Larger signature area predicted higher narcissism scores, overinvestment in R&D and acquisitions, lower subsequent firm profitability, and higher CEO compensation despite worse performance.

Signature size narcissism as a predictor outperformed most executive personality screens. The chain runs: signature area correlates with narcissism, narcissists overinvest in big visible projects, those projects underperform, the company suffers, the executive collects regardless.

The whole signal is sitting in a few square centimeters of ink at the bottom of a 10-K filing. Hedge fund analysts have started measuring it.

Sitting in the front row genuinely raises your grades — and the effect holds even when seats are assigned at random

The standard objection to “front-row students get better grades” is self-selection: motivated students pick the front, and the motivation does the work. Carl Wieman and Katherine Perkins controlled for this in a large intro physics class at Colorado by randomly assigning seats. Front-row students still outperformed back-row students. When they reassigned mid-semester, students newly moved to the front improved, and students moved to the back declined.

The front-row effect shows up in randomized economics classes too. The mechanism is probably some combination of closer attention, more eye contact with the instructor, and fewer distractions in the visual field. The location does work the student doesn’t have to do.

A 2020 replication found a smaller effect than Perkins and Wieman’s original, so the magnitude is contested. The direction isn’t. The chair is teaching the class as much as the professor is.

Which old songs you still listen to is a near-perfect window into the years you were 14 to 17

Carol Krumhansl and Justin Zupnick analyzed musical preferences across generations and found something they called the “cascading reminiscence bump” — adults of all ages show heightened preference not just for music from their own teen years, but for the music of their parents’ teen years and (more weakly) their grandparents’. A 2025 cross-cultural replication across 84 countries narrowed the peak to age 17.

The brain locks in the reminiscence bump more deeply than music encoded at any other age. Adolescent dopamine systems are at peak plasticity, identity formation runs hot, and the songs playing during that window get welded to autobiographical memory in a way that later music never quite replicates.

Which is why you can still sing 1998’s third-best Backstreet Boys hit but can’t remember a song you played last month. The choice to put on a teenage track when you have ten thousand other options says less about taste than it does about which year your operating system was installed.

None of these are scary, exactly. They’re just specific. The decisions we treat as random or trivial turn out to be carrying real signal, and the signal is usually about something you wouldn’t have guessed.
